The Niche Mistake Almost Every Artist Makes

Are mountains the niche? Or is the market?
How does this picture make you feel? And what even is a niche?
It’s easy to think your niche is your subject matter.
Mountains. Portraits. Abstracts.
It can be part of it, but there's more to it than that.
Not to be mistaken with artistic style, a niche is simply a subsection of a market.
Your subject matter can tell you a lot about your niche, but it’s really an examination of who is going to buy your work.
That’s what matters when you’re trying to sell.
Niche marketing forces you to ask: who am I actually talking to?
On the left, we have consistent subject matter.
On the right, we start to see who the work is for.
Same mountains… different context.
The buyer for a Great Basin print might not be the buyer for an Everest print.
This is also a great example of something @Taylor Sinople teaches all the time:
“Every piece is a niche.”
Even if the subject matter is the same, you need more context to market each work effectively.
If you want to go deeper on this, there’s lots of info inside the Art Storefronts Education Vault (included for all members).

What's your best "aha" niche moment?
I am still digesting the niche concept. It makes a big difference. I guess I will get a better idea as I progress in the marketing world. Thanks for posting.
