Daily Marketing Advice · July 21, 2026 · the thank-you that turns into a testimonial
When a collector tags you in a photo of your work hanging in their home, that moment is marketing gold. But most artists just hit the like button and move on. The move is to reply warmly, then ask if you can share it. Done right, it becomes a testimonial without you ever asking for one.
The gracious ask
Your reply should feel like gratitude, not a transaction. Try this exact wording:
"This makes my day! Your [living room / office / entryway] looks incredible. Would you mind if I shared this photo? I'd love to tag you and let people see how beautifully you've displayed it."
That's it. You're not demanding, you're asking. You're crediting them. And you're making it clear their taste matters. Most collectors say yes immediately because you framed it as a compliment, not a favor.
If they hesitate or ignore it, let it go. Never push. But nine times out of ten, they're thrilled you asked.
What to do once you have permission
If you have an email list: Send a thank-you email to your audience featuring the photo. Frame it as "Look where this piece ended up" and let the collector's home do the selling.
If you have a social following but no list: Post the photo as a social post with a caption like "Nothing beats seeing my work find its home. Thank you [collector name] for sharing this!" Tag them. Let your audience see the piece in context.
If you're just starting out: Save the photo in a folder labeled Collector Moments. When you do launch a website or start posting regularly, these images become your testimonials. A photo of your work in someone's home is more convincing than any description you could write.
The takeaway
Collector photos are proof your work belongs in someone's life. The ask is simple, the permission is usually instant, and the marketing writes itself. You're not being pushy, you're being grateful and giving them credit.
