Shores of the Ancients

Post image 1

Do you ever dream that you're flying? I had a dream recently where I was flying over the Aegean Sea and watching an ancient battle take place. The clouds were a purplish color with the faint glimmer of deep blue and specks of orange occasionally visible through the cloud cover. I tried to fly down lower, but there was an updraft that kept me for descending. I could faintly hear the battle cries of thousands of soldiers, but I was too far away to make out any ships. This piece is from that part of my dream.

Then, out of the sky above me, I started to hear "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd. I stopped worrying about the battle below me and lifted my eyes to focus on the path ahead of me. I think my subconscious was communicating with me and encouraging me to rise and shift course. I do love dreams and always embrace the experience they bestow upon me.

David Lee Hughes, the updraft keeping you from the battle is doing something here. Purple clouds holding you at a distance from what you came to see, then the shift when Floyd arrives and you stop trying to go down. That's the piece.

That moment when the dream won't let you descend and you're held at this one altitude watching something unfold below you. I've had mornings in the field where I wanted the light one way and the conditions just said no, wait here, and later I realized the spot I was kept at was the shot. The purples working against that deeper blue feel right for that held-in-place feeling, the distance you couldn't close. Your subconscious put Pink Floyd in at exactly the moment you needed to stop fighting the updraft.

I'm glad you understand. It was an odd sensation, but going with the flow felt like the right thing to do.
