This watercolor captures the quiet balance between architecture and landscape — the water, trees, and distinctive crown of The Drake coming together in one view.
I sat at the top to paint this quickly, trying to capture the view before it changed. The loose washes keep everything open while still holding the structure of the scene.
The Drake, at 1512–1514 Spruce Street in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, was built in 1928–1929. The 33-story Art Deco and Spanish Baroque building was designed by Ritter and Shay and is known for its nautical terra-cotta ornament and distinctive domed crown.
