Last week I had been looking forward to the Perseids meteor shower, and with a new moon promising dark skies, I headed to Smailholm Tower near Kelso in the Scottish Borders in the hope of catching a few streaks of light.
There was a great deal of cloud earlier in the evening, but just before midnight the skies cleared for a short while — long enough for me to witness some truly incredible meteors racing across the heavens. I was fortunate enough to capture one in a 15-second exposure, and in looking north-east I also managed to frame the outer edge of the Milky Way’s galactic core, where the luminous band stretches through Cassiopeia, Perseus, and Auriga.
