I've walked down this street toward the sea many times—on the way to the mall, the grocery store, or simply for a walk. At first, you don't notice what lies hidden behind the courtyards. The entrances are blocked by barriers, and parked cars hide almost everything.
One day I happened to look over the cars and saw something unexpected: a church without a single window. A simple stone basilica with narrow openings, almost as if it had come from the Byzantine era.
As I moved closer, the perspective became more dramatic, lifting the roofline and cross high into the sky. I wanted to step back to get a wider view, but there was nowhere to go. The church is surrounded by old and new apartment buildings, just a few hundred meters from the Black Sea.
Luxury cars filled the parking lot, including a vintage Cadillac convertible. I liked the contrast between the ancient stone church and the changing language of modern design.
Fashions, status symbols, and ideas of luxury come and go. Places like this remain—quiet landmarks for something more enduring.
The rain arrived before I could finish the painting, so the final brushstrokes were added later at home.
