Acrylic on canvas, Giclee print over plywood box and object
36 x 36 x 2 in
SDED Raining Nuts was literally designed to support the most elaborate 2D to 3D of all my pieces. The simple idea of having an actual hammer protrude a canvas (and look believable!) became a more complex piece, that was transformed into an homage to one of my favorite artists, René Magritte and a reference to his 1953, Golconda. From the two hammers shown only one was real, the second is a Giclee print cleverly positioned to appear 3D. Nuts of nearly identical size seem to be drops of rain coming from a cloud painted in the most childlike style (a flat rendering with the focus on its basic forms, a simplistic manner that is perpetually trying to convey complex emotions). The nuts glow like radioactive objects matching visually the sight of the two unusual hammers in the canvas.
