The Chokehold Of Conformity
In the fifth stage of The Weight We Carry, the series focuses on the painful point of silence: the alienation from one's own self due to social pressure. In "The Chokehold of Conformity" the gold becomes an oppressive weight. The composition – an intense, intimate look at the nape and hairline – shows the moment when the social mask weighs heavier than the identity itself.
Marika Junikajtes explores here the invisible noose of societal norms. The gold, which in the previous stages offered protection, has hardened into an uncompromising, rigid shield. It is the depiction of an inner impotence: We function perfectly in daily life, while the weight of expectations increasingly robs us of the air to breathe and the space for our own decisions. A tactile, intensely immersive work that forces the viewer to question their own daily burden.
