It was a cold January morning at Bernardo Wildlife area in New Mexico. As I waited for dawn, I could hear the cacophony of sandhill cranes and snow geese. As it became brighter, I was astounded to see how close the cranes were. The closest was about 10 feet away. What struck me about the scene was all the layers. First, the cranes, next the grasses, then a rising tide of snow geese, and the last the sky. For me, the layers were a reminder of the magic that occurs at the beginning of every day.
I imagine this piece hanging in a living room, study, or office, bringing the quiet drama of migration and the beauty of wild places into everyday life.
