Two men embrace after 42 years of wrongful imprisonment, a moment where grief and joy coexist. Their closeness carries the weight of what was lost—decades stolen, relationships fractured—alongside the relief, hope, and affirmation that come with justice and freedom. Soft blues and a pale ground flatten the space, focusing attention on the tender tension of their gesture, while layered brushwork and spare line work reveal the complex emotions on their faces. The painting reflects my ongoing exploration of belonging and the liminal spaces between who we have been and who we are becoming—moments where sorrow and joy, loss and hope, coexist within shared human experience.
