If you need a reason to get up in the morning, then get outside and greet this brand new creation called today!
This couple is experiencing a unique opportunity to see Kaelepulu Stream flowing into the ocean at Kaiua beach. This outlet for the stream drains Enchanted Lakes, named by developers in the 60's to help the swampland sound more desireable, is typically closed off by a sand bar all year long. Only occasionally does the city dredge and clear the mouth to allow the flow you see here. It drains over ten thousand acres of watershed marshlands with the help of another canal, Kawainui where I grew up, which is always open and flowing at the opposite end of Kailua bay. It was my backyard access to boyhood adventures, boating out to Mokulua island seen in this shot, and beaches and bays far beyond. You can get a view of the Kawainui canal on my "About" page, set in the beautiful backdrop of the Koolau mountains..
