Sustainability - Places series Oil on canvas Foreground: Various architectural elements from St Mark's Square in Venice are painted. At the top, from left to right, is the bell of the Clock Tower with the statues of the Moors of Venice, the two figures on the columns of the Piazzetta: the Lion of Venice with a book in his paw and the statue of St Theodore standing on a crocodile, symbolising his victory over evil. At the top left is the Bridge of Sighs, followed by the Doge's Palace. In the centre on the left is the front of a gondola and on the right the buildings flanking St Mark's Square. There are also three circles, which in turn contain several smaller circles. The large circles change the colour of the images and the smaller ones reflect the colours that are nearby. At the bottom left is St Mark's Basilica and below that the horses brought from Constantinople. Next to it is the Doge's Palace seen from the sea. At the bottom left is a well. Background: The background has a wavy shape, reminiscent of the sea, and has different colours, blue, green, yellow and orange, according to the dominant colour of the building closest to it. Concept/ meaning - The painting highlights what is most reminiscent of Venice's glory days today. St Mark's Square and the Murano glass industry were chosen. Elements of the period from that era are depicted, such as statues of Venice's patrons, historic buildings, statues from the Sack of Constantinople and references to the rainwater collection, filtering and storage system. These elements are painted as if the canvas were Murano glass. Murano glass artisans develop techniques that combine different colours in the Murano glass and the circles in the Murano glass influence the images and the effects of light on the work. The painting uses a rich color palette with blues, greens, oranges, and reds, creating a dynamic and imaginative interpretation of St Mark Square.— a striking piece that would bring color and narrative interest to your living room, study, or gallery wall.
