Description
I spent a month travelling around Japan's northern-most island in the fall of 2024. It's a wild place, full of animals, mountain ranges and active volcanoes. I've also looked at a lot of traditional Japanese pen and ink paintings. Somehow it all came together in this piece. The medium, water-soluble graphite, lent itself to the subject. The simple line of the hillside, something I rarely include, grounds the trees in a landscape, and both the layering and the receding trees on the right, create a subtle sense of perspective.
