Description
Dawn in Western Kenya is often blustery and biting cold, especially while driving in an open topped Land Cruiser. Bouncing along a deeply rutted dirt track at 4:45 a.m., we were scanning the flat grassy plains for "The One", you know, the one photograph where the timelessness of the African experience is encapsulated in single moment of digital serendipity. Actually at the moment I spotted this solitary tree silhouetted against the pre-dawn sky, my most pressing concern was that Janice had finished all the remaining hot chocolate in the thermos, and I was still shivering from the cold. We got out of the Land Cruiser and looked around for unfriendly wildlife. I had almost ten minutes to set up the composition as I envisioned it in my mind's eye. Using an unfiltered lens I shot dozens of bracketed shots, using various combinations of f/stop, ISO, and shutter speeds. Time was not my friend, as I wanted to get a clean set of photons onto the chip before the magical colors were swallowed by the sunrise. Lee DeCovnick
