Description
The Universe is incomprehensibly vast. Are we alone or is life scattered throughout? Perhaps we are figures moving through some matrix? Philosophers, theologians and scientists have circled these questions for as long as we've had the words to ask them. This series was born on a shoreline of grey Jurassic boulders at Llantwit Major, South Wales. I sat for hours, looking for the 'definitive' landscape image but it wouldn't be seen. The light slid sideways, the tide pulled back and returned, people came and went, still the boulders said nothing. Finally, my own 'big bang' arrived. What if these countless stones were planets, each planet, only an atom itself cradled inside another, on and on, past any scale the mind can hold? I photographed the boulders with that thought and they became worlds, and universes. The cosmos may feel eternal. Our own fragile, blue planet is not, perhaps that is the quietest truth these stones have to offer.
