Sparkling Dancer is a contemporary reinterpretation of Andrea del Verrocchio’s A Grotesque Dancer. Rather than parodying the Renaissance drawing, the work approaches it with affection and respect, preserving the delicacy and expressive movement of Verrocchio’s figure while introducing a contemporary language of colour. A trail of brilliant stars follows the dancer’s gestures, while a vibrant belt provides an unexpected burst of modern energy. What was once described as “grotesque” becomes joyful, exuberant and wonderfully alive. Part of the Art History Remix series, Sparkling Dancer explores how a small intervention can alter our emotional reading of an historical image without diminishing the original.
