Description
Star of the Sea, the sixth work in my Faith Series, grew from a season of waiting, uncertainty, and prayer while my son was deployed aboard a United States naval ship to the Middle East. During those months, I began to understand Mary not only as a sacred icon, but as a mother who knew the pain of loving a child she could not protect from suffering. After my son returned home safely, I encountered a statue of Mary, Star of the Sea—the patroness and protector of sailors—at a church whose powerful architecture was designed to withstand hurricanes and floods. Blended with the crucifix and Christ Child, these images became a meditation on motherhood, courage, sacrifice, and the enduring faith required to trust in God even when the outcome cannot be seen.
