Rearguard Falls is a place where we stop just about everytime we come to the Robson Valley. This 12x16 acrylic painting is set in the autumn as the water levels were low and the leaves had already turned.
The primary artistic challenge in this work was in trying to convey the movement of the water and the texture of the rocks. The water of the Fraser River at the falls is a striking, vibrant turquoise, which contrasts with the dynamic, churning white foam of the rapids in the foreground. I focused on capturing the powerful, rushing energy, which required careful attention to the direction and translucency of the water.
