One afternoon, when my great grandmother was a young mother, living in a log cabin in the Big Horn Basin in Wyoming, near the banks of the Shoshone River, she heard a voice. "Clifford's in the river. Clifford's in the river." She ran to the river and found that Clifford, her eldest son, 8 years old, had fallen in the river. She saved his life. When I was a child and she was very old, living in her home in the Big Horn Basin, she gathered us around her and told us this story about how God can helped her save the life of her beloved son. Her life was full of tragedy--and her son Clifford died months after saving him. Yet, Greatmama always found joy in her flowers and vegetables and still being able to mow her lawn at 90 years old.
