Where Memory Settles is an abstract, mixed media work created using oil, cold wax, collage, and pigments. The surface is built through the slow accumulation of layered oil and cold wax, which are repeatedly worked, obscured, and then scraped back to reveal traces of what lies beneath. This process allows earlier marks to re-emerge, embedding a visible sense of history within the painting.
Earthy strata and weathered textures reference the physical and emotional landscape of South Africa, the land of my upbringing. The work reflects on memory as something formed over time — layered, altered, and carried forward. Past and present coexist within the surface, suggesting that home is not fixed to a specific place, but lives within us, shaped by experience and held wherever we are.
