This rare antique moss agate amulet depicts a preening silver Hamsa bird, a goose/waterfowl forming a drop shape with its head dropped down. I combined it with tiny Roman glass beads that were made from shattered ancient Roman perfume bottles, plates or other objects, and opaque faceted Fluorite beads in various shades of light green green. Hamsa in Sanskrit (the 3,500 year old language of Hinduism) means 'goose' or 'swan' and is a sacred bird associated with Brahma (who rides a Hamsa), Saraswati (goddess of knowledge) and generally spiritual purity of the soul. The preening pose is significant as it represents self-purification. The Hamsa bird also symbolizes the ability to separate milk from water -- purity and discernment is now more important that ever in history. The amulet was sourced in the Near East and could have reached there via the Silk Road and later trade routes. Fluorite, by the way, is a crystal associated with a connection with the higher order.
