These five Coptic carnelian amulets are genuine artifacts sourced from a collection, and were handcrafted in Egypt 100-1800 years ago. The shapes depict a crux ansata and protective lunar amulets that blended Egyptian and early Christian symbolism. In the middle you will see a buffalo/bull with half-moon shaped horns and a set of vivid and friendly eyes. I combined them with matte tumbled moonstone to create a luminous piece, and a sterling silver handmade magnetic clasp from Indonesia. The Apis Bull was one of the most sacred animals in ancient Egypt, symbolizing strength, fertility and divine power. The very pronounced eyes are a classic feature of Coptic carving style, serving as protective 'seeing' elements in amuletsThe Coptic era in Egypt was from 300 AD to 1100 AD, which was the time Christianity took hold in Egypt, and these amulets were made for everyday wear by everyday people as they transitioned towards their new beliefs and culture. They are not massively detailed, and the artisans who made them created them for common use and protection. The moonstone beads are shaded in different slightly peachy colors and typically these shades are found in India. The magnetic sterling silver clasp was handmade in Indonesia and is contemporary, as are the moonstone beads.
