Commission: The Lady who commissioned this piece had very loose guidelines: she wanted a painting that embodied the mythical figure Diana, who is inextricably linked with dogs. The Commissioner had once been a puppy-raiser for a service golden retriever, so I included him—complete with the white, heart-shaped mark on his forehead. The Commissioner also wanted to include her two Sisters. In the window’s markings, I’ve hidden the word “sister” in Chinese characters. Inspired (as always) by Edward Hopper, and in particular “Chop Suey”—his painting that reflected 1920s social change and the increased social freedom of women, allowing them to dine without male chaperones.
