Study for Brigid
I painted this piece in preparation for a larger piece of the Celtic Goddess, Brigid.
Brigid was the most beloved Celtic Goddess of her Pagan followers. Brigid is called a "Triple-Goddess" because of her three distinct groups of attributes- fire, healing, and smithing. She was the daughter of "The Dagda," the great father-god of Ireland. Her other attributes are also known as her “sisters,” who are also named Brigid, with one representing fire, another healing, and the third smithing. She is also known as “the Goddess whom poets adored” and as a protector of animals and livestock. In Greek Mythology, the triple goddess symbolizes the maiden, mother, and crone, or the three stages of a woman's life.
I love the combination of symbolisms for Brigid. She is not one thing or symbolic of one thing, but of many, and her complexity is something I think many women can identify with.
I’ll keep you posted on the larger painting
