Taken Possession is a 12x16 oil painting featuring Mount Robson, viewed on our drive from Jasper as we headed to take possession of our McBride home. Instead, it felt like the mountains themselves took possession of us. The moment was unforgettable—the air clear and sharp, the late-season snow glowing against the rugged slopes. I wanted to capture that sense of awe and belonging that settled in as we first glimpsed the Robson Valley and realized it would become part of our lives.
In creating this piece, I focused on studying the subtle colours that form the shadows in the snow—tones of blue, violet, and grey that shift with the light. Building up the layers of paint was both a challenge and a joy, especially in balancing the mountain’s strength with the delicacy of its atmosphere. The composition is simple, but to me it holds the feeling of that first encounter—a quiet moment that marked the beginning of a deep connection to this landscape.
