The ”Sânzienele” are mythological fairies and a Romanian folk holiday celebrated on June 24, the birthday of Saint John the Baptist, combining pagan elements related to solar worship, fertility and the solstice with Christian celebration. These are fairies of the field, associated with small yellow flowers called "sânzienele" (Galium verum) and with rituals where girls weave wreaths and dance for abundance, before the magical period of midsummer.
