I captured Silent Flight in the late afternoon at Bernardo Wildlife Area in New Mexico. As I stood watching and listening to them fly toward the pond, I saw an image in my mind: a single sandhill crane, silhouetted against the soft sky. I quickly changed my camera settings and tracked one crane as it flew to its evening roost on the pond.
In this image, the crane becomes a pure silhouette—wings outstretched, neck extended, legs trailing gracefully behind. I wanted to focus on its shape, posture, and movement rather than fine detail. For me, this photograph is about the contrast between the quiet, floating presence of this one bird and the loud, rolling calls of the flock all around it. I wanted to feel the emotion of the tension between silence and sound.
