Botanic Fantasy is a reimagining of the botanical illustration tradition — a painting that bridges scientific wonder with intuitive invention. Inspired by a piece I created over 20 years ago, and by my early encounters with Ernst Haeckel’s meticulous illustrations, this piece brings that spirit of close observation into a surreal, otherworldly bloomscape.
Fantastical flora float in an infinite twilight, glowing like spores or moons adrift in a midnight garden. Golden orbs and delicate tendrils spiral through the darkness, forming imagined species that feel both deeply familiar and entirely unknown. Though rooted in the language of scientific study, these forms bloom into their own mythology — soft, surreal, and just slightly unearthly.
Painted with curiosity and reverence, each form is part memory, part speculation — a visual meditation on the strangeness, intelligence, and poetry of the natural world.
