This painting was created using a faded 50 year old polaroid (circa 1960's) from South Carolina as reference. The tension between the requisite posing in the backyard after church on an Easter Sunday - and the sisters' expressions creates a deeper subtext in this iconic period piece. The ambivalence, perhaps reluctance, to be photographed in overly bright light, or in dressy outfits while unable to play on the playground, demonstrates a divide between the actual girls and the cultural idea of what they should be. Little Women seemed to be a particularly apt title, leaving it up to the viewer to filter through their own lens.
