"Legend". I took the inspiration for this painting from one of the most famous old Albanian ballads that is related to the oath given, which for Albanians was more sacred than their own lives. This is the ballad, "The Oath of Constantine". The promise he made to his mother, that the only sister of the twelve brothers, Dorontina, married far away from their lands, Constantine would bring her home, whenever their mother would ask for her. But all twelve sons of the poor mother are killed in the war. When the mother goes to the graves of the sons and to the grave of Constantine, the mother calls out; ''Where is your oath that you gave me Constantine to bring me Dorontina". At night Constantine rises from the grave, the tombstone becomes his horse and brings Dorontina to his mother. Summary; even in death the oath was kept.
