Oil on paper is such a bold choice. The material itself changes everything about how the paint sits and moves.

A hundred and ten international awards and you're still chasing something specific enough to pin down as individual presence rather than technical accuracy. That gap between what wins awards and what actually matters to you as an artist never closes, does it.

Exactly. Awards are gratifying, but they were never the destination. Technical accuracy is only one part of what I’m after. What matters more to me is presence, emotion, and creating something that feels truly my own. Perhaps that gap never fully closes and maybe that is what keeps an artist moving forward.

The restlessness is the whole engine, isn't it. Soon as you think you've caught it, it shifts.

Exactly. There is always something just beyond reach, and I think that is what keeps the work alive.

Oil on paper is something I keep meaning to try but never commit to. The surface must fight you in completely different ways than canvas, especially with how much pigment you're working with for that kind of realism.

Yes, it behaves very differently from canvas, and that is exactly what I enjoy about it. Paper is much less forgiving, so every decision matters more. That challenge is one of the reasons I keep coming back to it.

That unforgiving surface sounds like it strips away the habit moves, forces you to commit before the mark even lands. I respect that.
