🎨 The Miami Art Beat — Your Local Art Roundup (Aug 02)
Happy August, Miami creatives! The heat is here, the humidity is thick, and yet somehow this city keeps delivering wall-to-wall reasons to leave the AC and go look at great art. Whether you're chasing a residency deadline, scoping a legendary Basquiat, or just want to wander Wynwood on a balmy Saturday night, your next few weeks are genuinely stacked. Here's what Arty's been watching for you.
🖼 On the walls right now
Basquiat: Figures, Signs, Symbols (June 25, 2026–June 6, 2027, PAMM). Ten iconic paintings and a sculpture from the Kenneth C. Griffin Collection, united in one room for the first time ever in Florida. This is the largest presentation of Basquiat's work the state has ever seen, and the timing with all those World Cup visitors in town made it feel like Miami was finally getting its due. Go more than once. It rewards it.
Jack Pierson: The Miami Years (through Aug 16, The Bass, Miami Beach). This is the final stretch for Pierson's solo at The Bass, so don't let it slip away. Closing August 16 means you have two weekends left, and that deadline has a way of clarifying things.
Cecilia Vicuña: Quipu Gut (through Aug 9, PAMM). Vicuña's sprawling textile meditation on ecology and memory has been hanging over PAMM's Biscayne Bay terrace for nearly two years. It closes August 9, which is genuinely this week. Go now or forever hold your peace.
James Turrell: Transcendent Light Experiences (ongoing, Superblue Miami). Turrell's immersive light environments remain one of the most transportive experiences in the city for photographers and painters alike. Bring a sketchbook. The way light behaves in those rooms will quietly rewire how you see color.
ICA Miami (ongoing, Design District). Free admission, always. Three floors of rotating contemporary work, including the long-running Pesca a la Encandilada installation. If you haven't been in the last month, something has likely changed.
🎉 Fresh openings to circle
John Baldessari: The End of the Line (opens Aug 20, PAMM). A full fifty years of work from the Craig Robins Collection arrives at PAMM in one of the most anticipated openings of the year. Robins and Baldessari had a real friendship and that intimacy shows in what's been gathered here. Mark your calendar for opening night.
Fragments of Time: Selections from PAMM's Collection (opens Aug 20, PAMM). Also opening on the 20th, this video-art deep dive from PAMM's permanent collection explores memory and the passage of time through moving image. Two significant openings in one evening at the same museum? Yes, PAMM is spoiling us.
🙋 Get in on it (don't just look, participate)
Wynwood Second Saturday Art Walk (Sat, Aug 9, 7–11 pm, Wynwood District). The monthly neighborhood ritual is back. Open galleries, live studios, street art, and the full Wynwood atmosphere between NW 23rd and 30th Streets. Free to wander, and it genuinely still delivers finds you won't see anywhere else.
Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Open Call (deadline Aug 31, 11:59 pm). The Deering Estate's prestigious AIR program is accepting applications for its 2027 season right now, open to visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary artists. No application fee, no cost to participate in the residency itself. Since 2012 this program has launched real careers. If you've been sitting on this one, August 31 is your hard deadline.
South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual & Media Artists Grant Workshop (Aug 4 and Aug 22, online, Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs). The SFCC grants of $7,500 and $15,000 are open to visual and media artists across Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, Palm Beach, and Martin counties. Attendance at at least one workshop is required to apply, and the August 4 session is literally this week. RSVP on the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs site.
Miami-Dade Community Grants Pre-Grant Workshop (Wed, Aug 6, 10:00 am, Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs). Arts groups, collectives, and individual artists can attend this free workshop to learn which Miami-Dade County cultural grant programs fit their projects. Quarterly funding for community-based events, fairs, publications, and festivals. If you have a project idea, this is where it starts becoming real.
Miami Art Week ARTWEEK™ Media Festival, Applications Opening Late August. Miami Art Week just announced that applications for their new Media Festival will go live in late August, welcoming short films, micro-shorts, and photography in both traditional and experimental formats. Get your work ready now so you're not scrambling when the portal opens.
🎟 Other Fun Things to Do in Miami This Month
Inter Miami CF Leagues Cup Phase One at Nu Stadium (Aug 5 vs. Atlético de San Luis, Aug 8 vs. CF Monterrey, Aug 12 vs. Club León). Leagues Cup 2026 is underway, and Inter Miami's home Phase One matches are right here at Nu Stadium. The energy at these MLS-vs-LIGA MX matchups is something special, and the stakes are real: top finishers earn spots in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
International Ballet Festival of Miami (multiple dates, August). Over 100 principal dancers from more than 20 elite international ballet companies descend on Miami for this annual festival. For any artist interested in the human form, movement, and costume, this is genuinely useful research in the best possible way.
PAMM Free Second Saturday (Sat, Aug 8, PAMM). PAMM opens its doors free to all on the second Saturday of every month. This Saturday it lands right before the Wynwood Art Walk in the evening, making for a genuinely excellent full art day in Miami. Plan accordingly.
Calle Ocho Free Monthly Art, Food & Music Celebration (Fri, Aug 21, Little Havana). The third-Friday free gathering on Calle Ocho mixes open galleries, street food, and live music in one of Miami's most alive neighborhoods. No cover, all atmosphere.
Miami Dolphins Preseason at Hard Rock Stadium (Aug 22 and Aug 28). The Dolphins open their 2026 preseason at home against the New York Giants on August 22, with a second home game on August 28. If you need a reason to head out to Miami Gardens, here are two of them.
Ricardo Montaner at Kaseya Center (Aug 29–30). Two nights from one of Latin music's most beloved voices, right downtown. Whether you're a longtime fan or just want to hear a sold-out arena sing along in Spanish, this is a Miami moment.
💛 Feel-good corner
Nation's Tallest Mural Completed in Downtown Miami. German artist MadC just finished a four-panel mural installation stretching 245 feet up the south face of the 24-story Excel Miami tower at 1550 NE Miami Place, making it the tallest mural in the United States. It's visible from across the city, it's permanent, and it's free to look at any time you're near the Metromover's School Board station. Miami keeps putting art where everyone can see it, and that is always worth celebrating.
