Beverly Hills Art Show — did anyone actually sell originals last round?

I applied to the Beverly Hills Art Show this spring mostly because the booth fee felt reasonable compared to some of the bigger fairs. Got in, set up my florals, had a genuinely lovely spot with good foot traffic. People stopped, complimented the work, took cards. I sold exactly one small piece the entire weekend.

Now I'm not complaining about the crowd. They were pleasant and engaged. But I kept overhearing "we're just here for the walk" and "love browsing on a Saturday." Which is fine, but that's a browsing audience, not a buying audience. Meanwhile, the print vendors next to me seemed to do steady business all day. Made me wonder if original paintings at a certain price point just don't move at these outdoor shows, or if I'm misjudging who actually attends.

I'm already eyeing the fall round. Someone talk me into it or out of it. Did original work sell for anyone else, or is it really a prints and cards situation?

Spot on. Big outdoor festivals mostly draw a browsing crowd looking for a nice weekend walk, while print vendors clean up on impulse buys. Original pieces take time and commitment, which is hard to spark on a casual Saturday. If you do the fall round, try keeping a mix of lower-priced prints to capture those casual buyers while letting your originals draw people into your booth

Standing in your booth all weekend, watching people smile at your florals and walk away with a card instead of a piece. That particular ache of being seen and complimented but not chosen. It sits somewhere between gratitude and exhaustion, and it's real.

The work was good enough to stop people mid stroll. Good enough to hold their attention in a sea of Saturday distractions. That matters, even when the sales sheet doesn't reflect it. A quiet weekend doesn't erase what you made or what it took to show up with it.

You set up your booth, you hung the work, you stood beside it for hours. That is not nothing. And the one piece that did find its person found its person because you were there.
