One more attempt at ink and watercolor. My goal was a rustic piece, so not a lot of heavy detail in the leaves. Products used are acrylic inks, fountain pen ink, and watercolor.

The fountain pen line as the anchor is what gets me. I tried that once with a dip pen and ended up chasing bleeding for twenty minutes before I gave up and let it turn into something else entirely. Trusting ink to stay put while you're layering watercolor over it takes guts I still don't have.

The way ink and watercolor sit together always surprises me. There's that looseness you get when you let the medium do what it wants, and then the fountain pen pulls it all into place. I can see the rustic side of it in what you've described, that choice to step back from heavy detail and trust the washes to carry the piece. The mixed ink base must give you such different staining than straight watercolor would. I'm still working out how much control to keep and how much to hand over when I layer coloured pencil, so I notice when someone else has found that balance in a completely different medium.

Thank you. I’m still learning this technique. I find it very freeing. Mostly it’s apply, mop up, leave some, apply, mop again, leave some, and on and on. I feel that I almost overworked the background, sometimes it’s hard to know when to step away. But all in all I’m pleased with it.

That rhythm you described, apply and mop and leave and apply again, sounds like you're building it the way I layer coloured pencil. Knowing when to stop is the hardest part of the technique, not the technique itself.

Hmmm I didn’t think about it that way, but you’re right
