I am a San Francisco-based artist making 3-dimensional digital collages, which reveal differnt images depending on which side the work is viewed from. Here is my collage of the Golden gate Bridge in the daytime and in the evening.
The two-sides thing is wild. I've only ever worked in 2D, mostly quick watercolors of doorways or light hitting a cafe table, so I can't even picture how you build that technically. What made you start working this way?
Hi Sadie - Thanks for your kind comment! This type of art is called an Agamograph, named after its creator, Yaacov Agam, who sadly recently passed. I took the concept and applied it to photography, blending two images in one photograph. I do find it is an excellent medium for storytelling. By the way, I love your photos as well!
The reveal structure is what makes this work. The shift from day to evening isn't just a trick, it's the actual point of the piece, and the fact that you're using the Golden Gate as subject gives the viewer something they already know how to see, which makes the double reading land harder. That bridge carries a lot of visual weight in any context, but asking it to hold two different atmospheres in the same frame is a compositional gamble that seems to be paying off here.
