When the sky puts on a show…

Tuesday, September 8th, 2026.

Last night, Rapperswil SG was caught in the raw power of nature.

Lightning tore across the sky, thunder rolled over Lake Zürich, and for a few moments, the night became a dramatic canvas of light and shadow.

As a photographer, you don’t always need to chase the extraordinary.

Sometimes, the extraordinary comes to your doorstep.

Sometimes the best reference material just walks up to your window. That drama of light tearing across the frame is something I try to study when I'm working on value contrast in my sketchbook, but seeing it captured in real time like this is different. The composition feels like it was handed to you fully formed.

I'm mostly digital but there's something about storm photography that reminds me why values matter so much. That split second when the lightning defines the composition and you either have it or you don't. No fixing it in post.
