The Art of Selling Art

What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I'm Mark. I have a portfolio page, I'm exhibited in a virtual gallery, I'm waiting to hear back from another gallery, I'm on LinkedIn and Instagram with 1000+ followers but still no sales. What can I do that won't break the bank to get seen?

This is so true in my community too. I’ve been in this gallery for 3 years and I can sell small items like my book, or my handmaid journals but art sales are limited. I think partly because people don’t understand abstract. They say they love it but don’t buy.

if the art is good and the location has traffic then the problem is the sales team.

if the sales team is good but there's no traffic, than the location is the problem.

If there is traffic and the sales team is good and people don't understand your art then your messaging needs to be better.

Which is the problem?

Yes, it’s only when I’m in the gallery that people buy my stuff.

Mark, how often do you make an offer?

ie - when people say that they love your art, can you turn that comment into a conversation and then into an offer?

Also, I took a look at your website since you linked it, and I am not really clear on what you are selling.
If you're on a budget for education, you can start with my Skool, it's $15/month

Or - if you need to begin with something more open-ended, start with focusing on lead generation.

Hey Mark! The fact that you're checking in and asking what to adjust instead of just waiting is the right move.

You've got the foundation (portfolio site, gallery presence, social accounts, 1,000+ followers), so the issue isn't visibility from zero. It's that followers aren't converting to buyers. Here's where free-to-cheap moves tend to break that open:

- Post more video, specifically short reels showing your process, your studio, the story behind a piece. Reels reach non-followers at a rate static posts can't touch, and they build the kind of trust that turns a scroller into a buyer. Even a 15-second phone clip of your workspace with a one-line caption works.

- Run a giveaway to build an email list. Pick a smaller piece or a print, set up a free landing page (Mailchimp or Beehiiv free tier), and promote it on Instagram and LinkedIn for two weeks. The goal isn't the giveaway itself. It's capturing emails so you can follow up directly instead of hoping the algorithm shows your posts.

- Start DMing people who engage with your work. When someone likes or comments, send a short, genuine message: "Thanks for the love on that one. What caught your eye?" That's not pushy, it's a conversation. Sales happen in conversations, not in feeds.

- Look at your website through a buyer's eyes. Visit MarkTheObserver.com on your phone and ask: is there a clear price on every piece? Is there a buy button within one tap? Is there an email signup? If any of those are missing, that's the leak.

The 1,000 followers you already have are enough to make a first sale. The unlock is usually moving from "posting and hoping" to "posting, capturing emails, and starting conversations." Pick the giveaway or the DMs this week and start there.

Want me to look through your portfolio and find an underrated piece to build a campaign around? Or I can draft your giveaway announcement post so you can copy, paste, and go.
