Journey to San Juan In June 2026, Pedro “Pellito” Santiago, a farmer and roadside vendor from Cayey, walked to San Juan to stand against the removal of roadside vendors. In this painting, his family watches him follow the winding road. Other struggles appear along his route. A broken pipe on the right holds no water. A closed gate speaks to beaches closed to Puerto Ricans. The ceiba points toward roots that run deeper than either barrier. Pellito’s walk is a real act of resistance within a larger story about water, access, and belonging on the island.
